Request Data Deletion
Town Crier is an audio-first driving companion for iPhone and Android that announces town names and shares curated facts as you drive. This page describes how to request deletion of the small amount of data Town Crier collects about you.
Because Town Crier has no accounts or logins, the only way we identify data associated with you is through your anonymous Device ID (formatted like TC-XXXX-XXXX). You can find your Device ID in the App's Settings screen, under the "About" section.
How to request deletion
- Open the Town Crier app.
- Go to Settings and scroll to the About section.
- Note your Device ID (looks like
TC-XXXX-XXXX). - Send an email to [email protected] with:
- Subject line: "Data deletion request"
- Your Device ID in the body of the email
- We will confirm receipt within 3 business days and complete the deletion within 30 days.
What gets deleted
When you request deletion, we will remove the following data from our servers:
- Problem Reports. Any reports you have submitted through the App's "Report a Problem" feature, including the details you provided, the town or coordinates involved, and any optional name or email you included.
- Content gap reports. Anonymous reports the App has submitted (if you had opted into "Help improve Town Crier" analytics) about towns missing from our content library, associated with your Device ID.
- Analytics events. If you had opted into anonymous analytics, we will delete the events associated with your Device ID from our product analytics system (PostHog).
What stays
The following data is either automatically deleted or is not associated with your Device ID in a way we can remove:
- Crash reports (Sentry). These are automatically deleted 90 days after they are received. We do not retain them longer than this default retention window. If you want them removed sooner, indicate that in your deletion request and we will do our best to expire them early.
- Aggregate anonymized data. If your data has been included in aggregate statistics (for example, total number of gap reports received in a given month), we cannot separate your contribution from the aggregate. This data is not linked to your Device ID.
- Compliance records. We may keep a minimal record that a deletion request was received and fulfilled, to demonstrate that we have complied with your request. This record does not include your data itself, only the fact that a request was processed.
Timeline
We will process deletion requests within 30 days of receipt, and typically much sooner. If we cannot complete deletion within 30 days for any reason (technical issue, ambiguity about the request), we will contact you at the email address you sent the request from.
Data stored only on your device
Some Town Crier data is stored only on your device and never sent to our servers. This data includes your announcement history, cached facts and images, your preferences and settings, and your Device ID itself. To delete this data, you can:
- Clear the app's history through the History screen in the App.
- Clear the app's data through your device's Settings → Apps → Town Crier → Storage → Clear data.
- Uninstall the app, which removes all local data including your Device ID.
You do not need to email us to remove data that only exists on your device.
Questions
