You can also send a report from inside the App: open Settings and tap Report a Problem. It includes the details we need to investigate.

What does Town Crier do?

Town Crier announces each town as you drive into it and shares an interesting fact about the place. Start the App, put your phone down, and drive. There's no route or destination to set.

Is Town Crier free?

Yes. Town Crier is free to use, with no ads and no account required.

Does it work with the screen off?

Yes. Town Crier keeps running in the background while you drive, so you can lock your phone or use other apps.

Why does Town Crier need location access "Always"?

To announce towns while your phone is locked or another app is open, Town Crier needs background location access. Your location is used on your device to work out which town you're in. See our Privacy Policy for details.

iPhone tips

When iOS first asks for location access, choose Allow While Using. Later, when iOS asks again, choose Change to Always Allow — this lets Town Crier keep announcing towns while your phone is locked. Low Power Mode can delay background location updates, so announcements may lag if it's on.

I'm not hearing any announcements.

• Check that location access for Town Crier is set to "Always" (iPhone: Settings → Town Crier → Location) or "Allow all the time" (Android).
• Make sure the App isn't muted and your media volume is up.
• If your phone is connected to your car, check that the car's audio source is set to Bluetooth.
• Towns you've heard recently are skipped for a while, so you won't hear the same town twice on a short trip.

Does it use mobile data?

A little. Town Crier downloads facts, photos, and audio for the towns around you as you drive. Places you've already visited are cached on your phone.

Please tell us! Use Report a Problem in the App, or email us with the town name and state.

Which devices are supported?

iPhone and Android phones.

Does it work with CarPlay or Android Auto?

Not yet. On both iPhone and Android, Town Crier plays through your car speakers over Bluetooth or a cable like any other audio app, with your phone mounted or in a pocket.
